When Lawmakers Go Missing, Don’t Blame The Public For Wondering What Happened

The nation’s capital was rattled following the weeks-long disappearance of Republican Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell and his apparent reappearance alongside the sudden death of Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham.

In both instances, online rumors and conspiracy theories took hold, with thousands of Americans wondering exactly what happened to their elected officials. But as Americans searched for answers, Washington insiders continued to write them off as conspiracy theorists, a prime example of the disconnect between the political establishment and the rest of the country.

Political pundits across the spectrum used these flashpoints to argue for term limits, age limits, a “25th Amendment” for Congress, or a slew of other reforms, but at its core, the issue is a lack of transparency and the continued underestimation of the average American’s intelligence and understanding of their own political system.

For decades, lawmakers far past their competence threshold have been sequestered in public office by their own insatiable thirst for power or by that of their staff.

Democratic California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, missed nearly three months of legislative session due to a severe case of shingles, Republican Texas Representative Kay Granger was discovered to have been living in an assisted living facility due to “dementia issues” after msissing over five months of votes, and Republican New Jersey Representative Tom Kean recently missed more than 140 roll call votes with no explanation, only to later say he was undergoing treatment for depression in a speech on the floor of the House.

These are only a few examples; such instances are abundant not to mention the thousands of theories that Former Democrat President Joe Biden spurred after his repeated instances of apparent cognitive impairment while serving as Commander in Chief.

All in all, Washington has a long and storied history of propping up incapacitated lawmakers to maintain power. And despite this, the Washington political apparatus continues to disparage those who try to explain the unexplainable disappearances of their lawmakers.

McConnell, who already had a well-documented history of health issues, disappeared for nearly a month. Journalists were frantically searching for answers. First responder calls were leaked, footage of an ambulance outside his home was released, and a chosen few claimed to have had magical “20-minute” phone calls with the missing Senator. Most recently, a photo of McConnell alongside his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, was released by his staff. The photo was paired with a precariously prepared statement that explained he had suffered a fall and was receiving treatment at the George Washington University Hospital.

All the evidence was endlessly analyzed, and theories of AI-enhanced photography, mysterious trips to China, and hallucinated phone calls captured the public’s interest.

The irony of the situation lies in the simplicity of putting to rest any rumors and conspiracies — an on-camera, face-to-face interview with a journalist.

Most recently, Lindsey Graham, the late senator from South Carolina, was the subject of emerging conspiracy theories. After his office announced his untimely passing due to a “brief and sudden illness,” theories began to swirl, particularly involving his trip to Ukraine in the days before his passing. Moreover, the involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) added fuel to the rumor mill, with FBI Director Kash Patel saying, “The FBI is assisting local authorities and has made every necessary resource available.” (RELATED: South Carolina Governor Names Late Sen. On Monday, numerous FBI agents were also seen at Graham’s residence in Washington, D.C., only furthering speculation around his death. Theories online include a potential poisoning by Russian operatives, a Russian strike on a Ukrainian weapons warehouse, or some other malicious act by Iran or Israel.

Regardless of McConnell’s true health status or the actual circumstances surrounding Graham’s passing, the American people have every right to speculate. And those within the Washington echo chamber should stop turning their noses up at those pursuing the truth when they refuse to be transparent.

Washington seems to believe the American people do not deserve explanations, sitting atop their ivory towers, discounting speculation about their intentional vagueness. Public officials campaign, swear an oath to the Constitution, and choose to serve the American people with a crucial unspoken commitment to transparency. Americans have plenty of reason to be skeptical, and they ought to continue to speculate until lawmakers can learn a policy of timely transparency and honesty.
