“I was a broadcaster for nine years; hell’s bells,” Gruden said, according to JoeBucsFan.com — a football news site dedicated to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where Gruden won a Super Bowl as head coach. “I want to be play-by-play.”
Gruden was an analyst on ESPN’s Monday Night Football for nine years from 2009–17 before returning for a second stint as the Las Vegas Raiders’ head coach — Gruden previously coached the Raiders from 1998–2001.
In 2021, Gruden’s coaching career came to an abrupt end when emails were leaked that allegedly contained racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments. However, most point to the jokes and disparaging remarks he made toward NFL commissioner Roger Goodell as the real reason for his dismissal from the Raiders. Insiders alleging to ESPN that the NFL front office essentially gave the Raiders no choice but to fire Gruden, with many pointing the finger directly at Goodell.

Gruden is currently suing the NFL and Roger Goodell for $150 million over the leaked emails. The trial is slated to begin in May 2027. (RELATED: NFL Legend John Riggins’ Washington Jersey To Be Retired)
He has previously expressed a desire to coach football again. “I love [football], and it’s pretty much all I have. I have an office—for people who don’t know—I’ve got a server in there. I just put a lot of money into a server that collects all the film and allows me to study it. Who knows what will happen, but I’m preparing myself as always to coach.”
In recent years, Gruden has been linked to several coaching searches across the NFL and college openings, but he now appears to be shifting his focus away from the sideline and into the broadcast booth.
