An unidentified 28-year-old man was killed by a tractor-trailer as he was fleeing an encounter with federal law enforcement officers in St. Augustine, Florida. ICE officers chased four fleeing men after an early morning encounter with their vehicle in a convenience store parking lot, The Guardian reported.

One individual reportedly ran onto a busy road during the chase and was hit by a semi truck. He died on the scene. (RELATED: REPORT: ICE Ends Most Vehicle Stops After Fatal Maine Shooting)

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the man was a Mexican national in a statement to the Daily Caller.

“On July 14, DHS law enforcement conducted an operation near St. Johns, Florida,” a DHS spokesperson told the Daily Caller, adding that the Florida Highway Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations are currently investigating the incident.

The spokesperson also added that an update will be provided “when available.”

“The pedestrian was struck by the tractor-trailer in the right lane and sustained fatal injuries on scene,” a Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson said in a statement to The Guardian. “The tractor-trailer immediately stopped and attempted to render aid to the victim.”

The incident marks the third death from ICE encounters in recent days, following fatal shootings in Texas and Maine.

ICE officials shot and killed a Mexican illegal immigrant last Tuesday in Texas after he weaponized his vehicle against agents while evading their attempts to stop him.

Another individual, suspected to be a Colombian national, was fatally shot by immigration enforcement agents in Maine on Tuesday during an ICE operation. The man was attempting to flee, and “fearing for public safety, an officer discharged his weapon,” DHS said in a statement.

The department has launched investigations into both incidents.

Following the Maine encounter, ICE agents were reportedly ordered to temporarily cease conducting non-urgent vehicle stops during immigration enforcement operations, according to multiple reports. Republican Maine Sen. Susan Collins confirmed she asked DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin to order the halt.

However, early Wednesday, President Donald Trump appeared to reinstate the practice, saying “we CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!”
