Popular Renaissance Festival Bans Creepy Fetish Weirdos From Its Grounds

The Maryland Renaissance Festival barred fursuits from its grounds for the 2026 season, according to the festival’s dress code. The prohibition surfaced in May, when organizers revised the policy to list the costumes among banned headwear, City Cast DC reported.
The policy groups fursuits with inappropriate face paint, offensive prosthetics and masks meant to scare people. All headwear must be removable, fit the event’s theme, and suit a family setting, the rules state. Anything deemed non-thematic gets turned away at the gate. General Manager Julius Smith told City Cast DC that customer complaints drove the decision. Some guests said they felt uncomfortable around fursuit wearers at recent fairs, he wrote in an email to the outlet. Smith added that patrons also argued the costumes clashed with the Renaissance setting.
The festival’s explanation did not stop there. Smith said his staff has dealt with furries staging unauthorized performances and passing themselves off as paid cast members. Festival rules bar guests from entertaining fellow attendees and forbid props that could fuel an impromptu show. The event bills itself as neither a cosplay nor a live-action roleplay gathering, reserving performances for its hired actors.
Members of the furry community pushed back hard. One commenter on a Facebook group called the ban discrimination. Smith said the festival fielded negative and vulgar messages over the policy, though he noted it also drew support from those who want the event to stay true to its theme.
Aston Hawthorne, a 33-year-old Virginia IT worker who asked to be identified by his furry character name, questioned why organizers singled out fursuits. “There are people wearing Spider-Man costumes, there are people wearing Deadpool outfits,” he told City Cast DC. Hawthorne still granted that the fair likely had reasons. He acknowledged he “respects the fact that clearly they had enough incidents to feel they were justified in making this decision.”
Hawthorne plans to skip the festival this year rather than attend without his suit. The event runs each weekend through Oct. 25.
