The shooting occurred in the town of Stade, west of Hamburg, at a facility that provides services and temporary housing for pregnant women and young mothers with children, according to CBS News.

The New York Times reported that a 45-year-old man had a scheduled appointment at the facility to visit his three-month-old child and discuss custody options with the mother. He then allegedly opened fire on the building, where the child and mother were inside.

All six victims were employees of the center; four were women, and two were men. Five victims died at the scene, while a sixth later succumbed to injuries at a hospital. Several additional people were reportedly wounded, though officials have not released a precise number, according to CBS News. Police arrested the suspected gunman shortly after the attack. They did not immediately identify him but have now announced that he was born in Germany and was of Turkish nationality, according to the BBC.

The outlet also reported that the suspect’s three-month-old daughter and the child’s mother were unharmed. Authorities are also investigating the possible involvement of an additional woman who was taken into custody following the shooting.

Investigators believe the violence was connected to an ongoing custody dispute involving the suspect, according to the New York Times.

“This was a murder committed for family reasons — an extremely cold-blooded act of violence with no political or economic motives,” Daniela Behrens, the interior minister for the state of Lower Saxony, said at a press briefing on Monday evening, according to a report from the New York Times.

According to Euronews, police launched a major emergency response and urged residents to avoid the area while officers secured the scene. Authorities later said there was no continuing threat to the public.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also reacted to the shooting, saying that he was “deeply shocked by the extent of violence in a place that is meant to provide protection,” reported Reuters.

Germany has experienced several mass shootings in recent years, Reuters noted. This includes a 2023 attack at a Jehovah’s Witness Hall in Hamburg that killed seven people and a 2020 shooting in the town of Rot am See that killed six people.
