Female Democrats Put Up Absurd Objection To Women’s History Museum

Democrats withdrew support from legislation advancing construction on the Smithsonian’s American Women’s History Museum after Republicans added a common sense amendment.

The House of Representatives voted 216 to 204 to reject the amended legislation Thursday. Minority Whip Katherine Clark may have played a hand in gathering opposition to the bill. Bloomberg Government’s Rachel Schilke noted Thursday that Clark was talking to the bill’s sponsor, Republican New York Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, and Majority House Leader Steve Scalise. Clark says she is the “mother of a transgender daughter,” and has previously expressed her “solidarity” with transgender-identified Americans.

Malliotakis introduced the bill February 2025. The Committee on House Administration passed Malliotakis’ legislation in March.

“[D]espite having more than 230 bipartisan cosponsors and the support of President Trump, this legislation passed out of Committee (7-4) along party lines, with the Democrats opposing it, simply because language was added via amendment by [Republican Illinois] Rep. Mary Miller to ensure the museum exhibits only biological women,” reads a March press release from Malliotakis.

New language added to the bill also directs the Museum to “be dedicated to preserving, researching, and presenting the history, achievements, and lived experiences of biological women in the United States.”

Another addition concerns “diversity of political viewpoints and authentic experiences.” The bill specifies that museum exhibits and program should strive to represent the “diversity of the political viewpoints and authentic experiences” of American women.

The Democratic Women’s Caucus announced their opposition to the amended Smithsonian Women’s History Museum Act on Monday.

For years, we worked with Republicans on a bipartisan bill to get the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum across the finish line … But then with no warning, Republicans completely changed the bill, throwing away years of bipartisan work and broad support,” Democratic Reps. Teresa Leger Fernández of New Mexico, Hillary Scholten of Michigan, and Emilia Sykes of Ohio said in a statement.

The Democratic reps claim the amended bill gives “Trump and his allies unregulated power over what content and which women can be included in the museum, and the museum’s location.” The amended bill does not seek to exclude any specific women or group of women, so far as I can tell. It does seek to prohibit museum curators from presenting men as women to guests.

“A museum about women, fought for and supported by women, should not be controlled by one man,” the statement concludes. A museum about women should not be controlled by a man, say female Democrats, but it should include men masquerading as women. Such is the logic of the Demcoratic Women’s Caucus. Frankly, I’m not sold on the concept of a museum dedicated solely to women’s history. It seems more sensible for other Smithsonian museums to include women’s contributions where appropriate.

But Democrats’ reaction to the amended bill is almost beyond parody. “Say, you know what this women’s museum could use? More men!”
